Festae tail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know what an adult festae looks like, I know how big they can get and I know they can be aggressive, still wouldn't say I know much about them. I didn't specifically look for a festae either, the adults are great looking fish and I saw someone local was almost giving his fish away as he was changing stock so I took it.

Gotcha understood. Thanks for the mature response

Same thing happened to me op but with juvies... Now that i have both growing out in the same tank its very easy to distinguish between the two :) but agree mayans are a pretty fish as well. And x3 on leaving the tail... Its not split to the flesh so shouldn't need anything but good food and good water and patience to get him/her in nice condition. My mayans atm are much prettier then my festea at 2.5" or so. Just fingers crossed i get a few nice fish out of my groups. And the worms explaine alot.. Lol i dropped a nice worm i caught outside in the tank for the tire track eel.. And the festea swarmed it!

I buy worms from a local bait store when i cant find any ouside ( we dont use pesticide ect in our lawn) and keep them in organic soil for a week min before feeding out. Been doing this for years since we had ray and spiney eels ect in the past.

How are the mayans with others in the tank? Are they as aggressive as festae? I've had it for over a week and it hasn't eaten a thing yet, think I may need some dithers as it seems very skittish. Will give earthworms a go tomorrow and hopefully he/she will eat!

Some uros live in fresh, some brackish, some in total sea water(Isla de Mujeres strain), some of these are very different in appearance from others, and may at some time in the near future be given separate species status
When I had uropthalmus, they were fairly docile, even when they spawned in a 150 gal cichlid community tank.
Your's (OP) appears to be a female (by the dark spot in the dorsal).
In nature females and sub-dominant males live in large groups, the dominant males hold territorial areas driving all but receptive females away.
The large groups in my video from Cenote Azul below, appear to be mostly females, notice many wounds and torn fins.

Very cool info duanes... So not much unlike our native sunfish? And our mayans where in the tank a good week before we got the festea... They where more dominant at first but now that the festea are settled in they have taken over for sure.. So far they get along well enough i see no reason to start dividing ( i hear they can interbreed so will be watching to avoid hybrid pairs). But atm our festea rule, red devil, butti, mayans, polleni are the order of dominance... But these are all juvenile fish atm. The mayans tended to be more aggressive with eachother ( we have 3) then with other species.. But they will school/move with the festea (6) abit yet maintain their own heirachy.... Yes i spend alot of time watching them all. i do not have an adults but i get the vibe the mayans will not be "tank bangers" and need their own set-up in the future to avoid deaths.

I swear, I am going to get a huge aquarium, fill them full of Mayans and sell them as Festae. I could retire the following year! Most common mistake of all time, yet the two barely look alike past 2-3 inches.

Lol if they look like this you might be able to. This is a wild in a man made canal in Mexico. They were about 12". Each fish had about 4' in between each other. There were a few pairs w/ fry.
