Festae vs argentea vs odo

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Everything I've had experience in says all of those fish require a 180 gallon 6'x2'x2' tank. Festae and Argentea especially.

I've never bred odoe, but I've kept multiple fish in a smaller 100 gallon tank and had aggression problems.

I think your best bet is the pike - a mature male festae will most assuredly kill his mate in a tank that small. You'd be able to get away with the argentea if you found a bonded pair, and the pair kept that bond during the tank transfer.

i have no experience with these so this is just what iv read from others and iv seen lots of people post pics of their argentea pair with dividers in saying that unless theyr breeding they cant be together or he beats her up, maybe a pair where the female is alot smaller could be easier as you could provide hiding spaces that only she fits into so the male cant get to her, this could work with festae though the males grow to like 20in so that would be pretty big as he would grow longer than your tank is wide, im growing some festae fry right now but will only be keeping a female in my 5ft 120g tank with tankmates because i try to keep fish that dont grow longer than tank is wide, but ive seen their parents personally and they are quite a sight to see:drool:
never seen a festae over 15"

i havnt either as iv only seen one pair, which is the pair iv gotten my fry from and they are not fully grown yet (male is like 12-14in i think? VRWC's pair) but from everything iv read it says males get to 20in as max soo i was just using that info

I would say that Scotts male is around 10", but thats a guess. His tank is so big though its hard to tell.

Once again, thanks for all of the replies. There doesn't seem to be a clear cut winner amongst my options...this isn't helping my procratination of setting this tank back up.

I think i'm between odo and festae...with the odo slightly ahead for the wow factor a large male produces should I need to go solo if the pair are not working out.

I'm willing to listen to other opinions or options.

Here is a question then...which large NW cichlid exhibits the best pair bond?

haha yeah i was thinking like 12in but your right its hard to tell in his huge tank lol

the odo's (aka black nasty) looks just turns me cold.
Apparently a odo at around 9+ inches can rip apart a Dovii twice its size. a true monster for the die-hard monster Cichlid fanatics. when i see one in my aquatic shop im going to give them a try. . . Set up a new tank and hide my gold and diamonds in with it. and if any burglars try to steal it whilst im asleep will get their hand ripped off.
