Festae vs. Mayan in temperment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When it comes down to temprement they're about the same - I'd say a male festae would be the nastiest at full grown adult size - but there's not such a large difference in temprement that it's going to make any difference in the lines of what you can and can't keep in a tank.

Female festae from what I've seen are shy - males are outgoing.

I don't have any experience with the differences in female and male uro's.

my Mayan follows me around the room, he flares up his gills and fights with you through the glass if you get close.
he is very aware of you,
his pale shiney blue stripes turn jet black in an instant if you annoy him,
great characters!

heres a pic of mine, bare in mind his fin was all ripped when i got him, its repaired now and looks great! sorry i have no recent pictures.
this is him when he gets angry with the black bars

I think, if you kept 2 M+F they would pair and breed in the normal fashion.
2 females MAY work. but im sure if you had 2 males the festae would most likely anhialate the mayan. this all ofcourse depends on the tanksize

if your looking for a pair, simply buy 3 of each, then there is a chance you will get at least 1 M and 1 F of each kind, even 4 if you want to be sure
then just mix and match your pair. at that size they should be ok if you feed them well to help them grow and mature quicker
anyone else have any suggestions?

Never owned a festea but my old mayn was very bold ate a ton and was a fun fish but as he grew he started to get aggrssive and eventually killed my needlefish so i had to get rid of him

Mayan are more aggressive early on in all instances i've owned them. As someone said Festae take a while to come out of their shell. I've also found Uro to be more personable (less shy).

On the other hand the look of Festae are hard to beat and if you are willing to wait till they hit about 8+ inches they are definitely worth the wait. At that size they seem to hide a lot less. That's been my experience.

Well, since I truely couldn't decide between the two. I just got one of each. :D They are both about 2" right now, although I swear I can tell the mayan is growing already.

You were right when you said the mayan would have more bravo, he always comes to the front of the tank when I walk by while the festae is more in the background. As of now, none of them are being overly aggressive to my fish. Actually, my 3" Firemouth is still the queen of the tank, which surprised me.

Won't last long my mayan was a very nice fish till he hit around 3'' then he got pushy when i came to food then when it came to space and at 4'' he was very aggressive he would try to take on a jaguar that was alot bigger

Mayans do grow fast mainly due to the fact they eat a TON
