Have had both and I currently have a 4 inch male Festae-Mayans start off more aggressive but in the long run Festae are meaner-in my opinion you could do either-Festae is a lot better looking though-try to get a female do not get as large.

I have a 5" male festae that nearly killed and removed almost all the fins from a 5" sailfin pleco, my buddy has a pair of Mayans in a 125 that killed the 2 flowerhorns in the tank, and the male is NUTZ! He jumps out of the tank to try to bite you if you hold your hand above the tank. You're taking a big chance with either of them.

That's only because the Festae are more sought after and talked about. I've seen them both in person and both species are MEAN! Even the babies from my friends pair of Mayan's were starting to get aggressive at 1.5", they are all in the hands of other members now so we'll see how they turn out
haha, sounds like I have my hands full with these guys. Although I'm half positive that they are both female, we'll see. I'll try to post picts soon.
Neither belong on the top 5 list of meanest cichlids out there - but Festae are somewhat notorious for needing a tank upwards of 180 gallon to even have a breeding pair, mayans are not.
