Well going by your other thread it looks like you got burned. Please don't take this as a dig at you personally, its something I wonder every time I see a thread like this....

For someone who lives on an isolated island in at the bottom of the world having to make do with whatever fish turn up at the LFS, threads like this really make me bang my head against the keyboard. There are several vendors and retailers (like Rapps, for example) who specialise in cichlids and sell high quality and correctly identified fish. Why do so many people by "festae" from their LFS and get bummed when they turn out to be mayans, or buy "trimacs" and find out they're flowerhorns, when you have the option of buying quality stock from someone like Rapps? Do none of the specialist breeders have festae in stock? Do people not want to take the risk or pay the extra for shipping? Just thought you'd grab a bargain on impulse?

I'd give my left nut to be able to order off Rapps stock list (I've given up looking at it as it makes me jealous, so I'm not sure if festae is on there at the moment) but with out import restrictions and lengthy and expensive quarantine requirements I would be looking at THOUSANDS of dollars just in fees to Biosecurity (govt department), plus I would be highly restricted in the species I could bring in as our list of allowable imports has hardly been updated since its creating on the mid 90's, and even after all that there wouldn't be anywhere near enough of a market for the fish here to make it even remotely viable [financially].

So why do I keep seeing you Yanks making threads like this when there are quality breeders/suppliers out there you could be ordering from????

I was not activley looking for Festae at all... matter of fact I'm trying to sell a few of my cichlids. I went to buy salt, however seen these three for $15 and thought why not?? Most of my fish have come from Rapps, who has not had Fesate for at least about a year I belive. Also, there are other people on here who sell baby Fesate too!!! I'm not upset if these guys are Mayans, however I really would have liked to say I picked up three Festae at a LFS for $15, lol. I curerently own a 9-10" male, who is in my avater... I got him at 3" or so from a LFS!!!. I never seen Fesate at 1/2" and took a chance. Thank you.

Many of the Festae breeders in here run out of fry as soon as their eggs hatch, it's not as easy as you think, at least Rapps hasn't had any festae in a few months. Not only that but sometimes people want as much as $30 per 0.5" fry, at that size you're likely to lose some of them during shipping, not counting the ones that might die soon after they arrive from bloat or stress or whatever, you need to order many of them to make sure a good number survive and grow up. That would be $300 for 10 little fish (that are also extremely aggressive and slow growers) plus shipping, which can be as much as $50 depending on what state you're in. Not everyone is willing to spend that kind on money on a fish, you could buy an used aquarium for less lol.

I got mine after looking for about 6 months because I was lucky and someone pmed me about a farm in FL that happened to have some... really cheap too, I got a bunch and thanks god I haven't lost any so far.

I just picked up another 55g and as soon as I get the frame fixed (center brace broke)... I will be getting something to grow out. Maybe Festae!!!
