For those that own them, is it possible to keep ANYTHING with a pair of Festae, in a 180 ? How would a single male do in a "community" ? Are they very owner responsive ?

And if anyone has any pictures they would like to share, i would love to see them !

Not asking for much really, is it

Cheers

It depends on the Festae's individual level of aggression. I've kept other cichlids with Festae in the past just fine until they started breeding and then all bets were off. It's kind of a gamble to breed in a community cichlid tank. But...mine never seem to care much about my striped raphael catfish or bichirs though....I dunno why.

Here's a link to some of my most recent pics...enjoy :)

Yeah... pretty much, once breeding begins to happen, your going to have problems. With most CA cichlids... not just festae. Unless you have an extremely huge tank.

Very nice !

Could 2 or 3 female Honduran red points and half a dozen tin foil barbs or something similar work with a pair in a 180 ?

I've seen ppl keep for example, geophagus with festae, maybe oddballs also, personally my festae pair snap with anything else in the tank, bu tthey're a breeding pair...a male could fit in a community, but I'd suggest tankmates of a similar temperament...are they owner responsive? not as much as your parachromis/amphilophous types ime, absolutely gorjus tho :-)

These fish are as rare as rocking horse s**t here ! At least i can never find any !

The reason i asked about them is because i have just brought 5 f1's. I had already brought a few fish that were going to be headed for the 180. These Festae came up and i just couldn't resist them. So everything else has gone to a friends house who is planning on growing them out, which was my initial intentions, and made room for 5 stunning little f1 Festae :nilly::nilly:

They are only about an inch at the moment.

I had planned on having the setup pretty dark, but from everything i have read these Festae will look alot better with a lighter substrate. So another change of plans ! I will get there eventually

Oh ur in the UK :-) Hopefully mine will produce some fry, and I'll do better trying to grow them out this time.

yep, very difficult to find..I have F1s as well, had about 12, got a pair and sold most of the rest leaving behind 1 female as spare in the community tank.

I have black substrate just cos I like the look :-)

I'd be careful about tankmates, prob best to introduce them early if that's your plan, and keep a close eye on the tank if/when they breed.

Well, tankmates will be near impossible with a mating pair, imo, unless you have a really large tank. I've only had a male before, and dude was pretty nasty at times. I always thought the females were a bit milder than the males, but I do not know that definitively, as I've yet to have a female.
