Aye, definately a Mesonautus. One of the coolest SA cichlids available. You can ID them to a certain extent using the # of their stress bars or bands. Still not very good at it. They are in my book a very regal, laid back cichlids. Love watching them cruise the tank like its their throne. Probably one of the best candidates for a planted tank, they just look fantastic in them. They look crazy awesome in a shoal of 5 to 6. The more the better!! They do get kinda large though, with some species pushing 10"!!! Takes them a long time to get there though.

Definately a great cichlid. You won't regret picking it up! :D

I really want some, I think they'd work nicely with my sevs, uaru, and chocolate. If only...LFS situation down here, not good :(

Judging by those I'd say it's a young Rio Tapajos, but there are other variants not listed there - I just can't find a page with em'.

thanks yeah i think that looks like it Rio Tapajos

The body markings appear to be stress markings, very similar to my H. temporalis when he's stressed. The Rio Tapajos variety on Cichlid-Forum is also in breeding dress so ultimately ID'ing the fish is difficult until it's settled in more.

Yeah these pictures were like minutes after it was put in the tank
I'll take some new pictures sometime

LFS here arent too good either, i got this one at a store about 1 hour away

this multi quote thing is too cool

Yeah, they can be rather slow growers. Although, mine did have a growth spurt after I moved it to the 300gal. :) Took mine about two years to go from .5" to 7". If that gives you any idea on growth. :)

I know if the LFS here got in any I would buy them all in a heart beat!! :)

Be careful buying at different times, at least if you want to breed them. All the different (6-7) species in the genus are sold as "festivum" so Unless they're showing their stress bars and you're good at telling them apart, you could be buying 2 (or more) different species. If you want to avoid even the possibility of either inbreeding (same batch) or hybridizing... do your research about 3 times over....

You just rezzed a very dead thread. LOL
