Ok, so for 2 friggin years Ive been trying to get festae to spawn. My male, which Ive had since Nov. 07, has gone through 6 wild caught females since about this time last year. 2 may have died from parasites, Im still not quite sure what happened with them.
Anyways, I noticed she has been hiding in a new spot since I re-aquascaped the tank. I didnt think much of it because shed come out to eat (which I didnt think shed do if spawning or protecting eggs) and would be out cruising the tank occasionally.
Ive added a jag pair, which is now trying to spawn in the other side of the tank as well and fighting the grammode pair for the area. Funny thing is, the grammodes are only about 3.5/4 inches and the jag pair is a 6inch male, 4 inch female...and the grammodes have stood their ground and possibly won the space. These Jags though...are the meanest Ive ever had out of about 5 different times Ive had them. Ive always gotten rid of them because they were hiders, passive or just wouldnt even defend themselves and would have gotten killed with the stock Ive always had...but these guys are no joke. the male isnt scared to attack the male festae (11 inches) if he comes near his side of the tank...and now suffers a pretty decent gash on his side as proof hell tussle. Also, hes annihilated my convict "colony"...Im down to about 5 cons now.
Ive converted the tank to all live plants, T5s and all mopani wood that ive had soaking in rubbermaid containers outside in the sunlight, growing algae on it so that it would have a base to start growing on in the tank. The wood is placed on top of a lot of rocks and sand and has tons of caves and paths underneath it for hiding. its where the festae spawned. Being wild caught, im guessing the live plants, t5s, wood and tannins leeched possibly made the festae feel more at home and comfortable enough to spawn.
