Im planning a 75 gallon Tropheus tank and I wanted to ask a few thousand questions(jk..lol). First my tap water ph is between 7.2 - 7.4 and I have a 25 pound bag of crushed coral and two 25 pound bags of estes sand that will be my substrate as well as some nice pieces of THR. My filtration is 1 Fluval 405 and I ordered a Hydro-Sponge filter IV. Heater is a eheim jager thermostat 150w heater. First question.....For the sponge filter I wanted to put it in the corner of the tank. I've seen set-ups where there are bubbles floating to the top of the water. Is that done with a power head or an air pump? Second question I want to put a power head in the tank also as I've read tropheus like a lot of water movement. I prefer to go with a maxi-jet and wanted to know, what size would be best for my tank? Here is a link to the sizes.. http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.co...tid=4609&rel=1

I have a ways to go but just want to make sure I do things correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!..Thanx MFK!....BTW ....Its been a few years but I made my way back....and I'm happy to be back!!:nilly:

That sounds like a great start. I just set up my first tropheus tank about 3 months ago and already i have a female holding!!! They are a ton of fun. That sounds like a lot of substrate, i used a little to much, and i am just warning you, they like to make holes....I use sponge filters in my fry tanks as well as some of my other tanks. In order to get the bubbles i run a tube down that is conected to an air pump. I do not use any power heads but im sure there are others that will help you with that. Good Luck and keep us posted.

air pump for the sponge filter. I would just get another large canister and skip the powerhead.

Thanks!. Am I ok with the amount of crushed coral and sand Im putting in the tank?

yikes that is a lot... you want just above a lb per gallon. unless it is a tall tank then less than a lb. I would say 50 lbs is more than enough.

I have 50 pounds of Estes sand and a 25 pound bag of crushed coral. What do I need more or less of?

I took your advicd and picked up a fluval 305 on sale. Now I have another dilemma. I was testing my equipment and my eheim jaber heater is gone. I never really liked it but I remember using the marine-land stealth heater and were realiable. I want to use 2. How mant watts should each be?. MInd you that My room is on the cold side...very cold side. Without heaters the temp goes down to like 60-65 degrees.

I agree with the addition of another cannister filter. No such thing as too much filtration. Down the road you might consider another! I really like the emperor 400 as it moves a lot of water, has two bio wheels and is very easy to change the filters. I may have missed it but we don't know the bottom dimentions of your tank which might change the amounts of substrate you utilize. I think the thickness of the sand is more important than the pounds.
