FH "experts" help me out

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since you don't want the XL Nuchal hump, maybe go for a Red Texas Cichlid instead of a FH.

They are vicious and probably a lot more durable than an FH.
The Red Texas has the same general shape as a FH, has vibrant colors, much smaller nuchal hump.

I kept an unfaded Red Texas for several years. He was a beautiful fish, closely resembling a Kamfa.

Here's a pic of him.

Agreed. I have a Thai Green Texas x vieja (red spot gut) imported from Thailand. The 50% green Texas with the 50% vieja (in my case) or amph, or 25% each split of vieja and amph like Red Texas are, produces a natural looking nuchal hump that compliments the form of the fish. Sounds like that’s more your speed/what you’re looking for. Majority of these Flowerhorn’s all get unnaturally sized and shaped nuchal hump too varying degrees. The Texas/vieja/amph hybrids come with the similar Flowerhorn attitude and behavior. At the end of the day it all depends on the individual fish for that, anyways, but my Thai GT x Red Spot Gut is quite the Character.

These are photos from the seller when he was a bit younger. His nuchal hump is more developed and pronounced. When he’s a full grown adult his nuchal hump will still be quite large but not unnatural looking. Compare to pure Texas nuchal humps and pure vieja nuchal humps on large males. They start with basically nothing, just some curvature at 3 inch while all these flowerhorns have a noticeable and often more then just a noticeable nuchal hump at 3-4 inch so progressed too adult hood they most all will have typical Flowerhorn-Big Nuchal humps

Their are many different Texas hybrids and vieja hybrids being bred and imported out of Thailand and just as much If not honestly more selection then Flowerhorns.

I did that already. Bought 5 juvenile red texas from Thailand a couple years ago. Eventually rehomed them all.
