FH fades in darker aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Faders are flowerhorns that go black then peel, not all flowerhorns peel/fade.

Faders for example are jin kangs & red texas, they look like normal flowerhorn then go straight black then the black peels back to generally a yellow/golden/orange base colour.

Example - My peeling fader flowerhorn

I think he was refering to faders on black gravel looking better due to the fact a fader with white gravel wont have a strong yellow/orange/red colouring. Well as much as a darker substrate.

Hope this helps.

Gotcha. I thought all FHs faded/peeled though. This is very new to me and quite interesting. What determines if they will be one of the faders or not?

I got this guy several months ago as a Fire Red FH or something from a LFS. It was only $9.99 since they were having a sale on it, so I got it just to find out what it would look like. About three weeks after I got it it started fading, and now it has started peeling. So this fish would look best with a dark substrate? I've got the back and sides painted black, but my sand is a brownish color. Any idea on an accurate ID too? Grasping at straws I know since its probably low grade, but thought I'd ask.

I also got a few of those baby RT from cjbarth. Figured it was worth a shot. How can I tell if they are starting to fade though? The largest, most dominant one ( 1.5" ) is starting to get some black on his chin, pelvic, and caudal fins. Is that the start of fading? :nilly:

Are faders more desirable than the ones that don't? I think they are almost cooler cuz its like they metamorphosis into a better looking fish.

Thanks btw, very informative. Still so many questions though!

Very low grade zz starting to fade. One of the parents probably wasn't even a flowerhorn.

It all comes down to individual preferences.. But imho, faders are really cool.. like you said they turn from nothing into something..

Not all FH fade only a small percentage. Some people like faders others don't. It is more of a preference. They are harder to find than most FH.

When RT fade it will start to turn grey or black. You will begin to think it is the ugly duckling of the bunch because its got the ugliest color. Than it will start to peel or fade and the fish will turn yellow or orange.

Are you from MN. There was a bunch of those faded cichlid at a LFS. I thought is was strange they were selling them as Fire Heads. The Fire Heads I kept never fade and the shape was not even close to Fire Heads when I looking at them. My first thought was Red Shock or Golden Monkey or some one trying to create a Rainbow King.

Keep us posted on your faded Fire Head I want to see what they look like when they get bigger. Also good luck on the RT. They are still cool fish it they don't fade.

Thanks for the plug Jer..... Just going to put my 2 cents in on this one....here is an example of what a fader RT should probably look like .... this one is close to 3 inches.....click the video link to check it out...I have shown this video to the breeder where I got my pair from in Thailand....so those of you who have seen this pair on the forum....know who I am talking about....he is impressed to say the least...

Thats awesome Chris!! I hope some of mine start to look that nice! Crazy cool blues on those ones!!! Its odd, but two of my SMALLER ones are almost completely black. You can just barely see their spangles. Perhaps its a subdominant thing where they are trying to attract less attention? They all seem happy though.

Since I switched over to spirulena flakes and algae wafers I haven't had any more problems with die off either! Whew! Only down side is I'm down to six. :( I'm happy with that number though!

I'm doing a photo journal of them, a picture each week to see if I can document any of the color changes. Not sure which ones I will single out to keep it consistant. Was thinking the largest one and the smallest one perhaps?

Hey Jer, I starting selling the second batch, and I would like to send you some more fish with in a week. Send me a message and some pics I would like to see some of your RT that you got from me. Check out the thread with updated pics of the growout I kept if haven't already!!
