FH not eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
flowerhorn can live 1 month or more without eating. YOu spoil it with "treats" and good luck getting him on pellet. If you want to feed it feeders and live food go for it, if you want to get the most out of your fish with a quality diet to bring the most out of your fish, starve it untill it accepts pellet. It will get hungry and eat. I have a pike cichlid that I was told would not eat pellet if it's life depended on it. Thats all he gets now because he's in with my ILC flowerhorn, and he readily accepts pellet. And it actually has color to it now that it has been on a quality diet. It's ones personal choice, but feeders don't come close to the balanced diet a flowerhorn needs to bring out it's true potential IMO.

Well he still has'nt eat but he did take a closer look at some pellets. I'm gonna try and hold off on the feeders for now (never liked feeding live fish due to diseases and such). He still has good color and fins and all look good and still swimming around alot, so I don't think its to stressed yet or anything. As far as his tank goes all the parameters are very good 0-nitrates and 0-nitrites the ph is a little high with my tap water but I never had any problems resulting from that. I'll just be happy to see it eat something (very soon I hope) so I can quit worrying about it.

He finally ate a single pellet. Granted thats not much but its a start. He is sick though he's got popeye. I'm treating him for that and still trying to get him to eat some more. Anyone know about how long it takes for popeye to start improving? I've been treating it for several days now but it doesn't look like its getting better. I'm using melafix. Is there something someone could recommend that works well for popeye?

it takes awhile to treat, and treat an extra treatment after it looks better just to make sure it's healed. I have had good results using metrodidizol. It works even better if you can get the fish to eat it. If he eats pellet, soak some pellet in a tiny bit of water with metro mixed in and feed it to your fish. Thats going to be hard since the fish isn't eating, but there was no mention of the popeye before, and that is why the fish is not eating more than likely. You may want to try to stuff some metro in an earthworm and see if the fish will eat it. If you can get him to ingest some antibiotics, he will heal much faster.
