FH's diet, OK or not?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was just feeling. I am very happy with my regiment of Omega One veggies and cichlid pellets, Chingmix, Hikari, and frozen bloodworms. I am way too nervous to add anything live. But, I did want to see what other people were doing. On another site some people are feeding their FH's leftovers from their dinner tables...

Could you give some examples of exactly what nutrients those would be?

I haven't fed live or frozen in over a decade, so I would be very interested in knowing exactly what nutrients my fish are supposedly missing out on.

Not knocking those who do feed live/frozen, just stating that you don't have to, unless someone feels they can answer my question above.
Coming from someone who feeds NLS(no doubt one of the best brand out there), I'm sure you are well aware that not all pellets are manufactured using good quality ingredients.. and not everyone can get hold of NLS, ChingMix, etc so the next best thing would be live..

In the case of OP, he asked if it's ok to feed earthworms & personally I don't see anything wrong with that unless you want to tell me why it's bad to feed live quarantined feeders..

No problem, I just thought that you were painting with a rather broad brush.

As long as one is aware of the potential risks involved with feeding live foods, I see no problem with that either.

earthworms are fine if you know what you put into your garden, but he'd LOVE them, get him some bloodworms too, it will bring out the red, and i bet he'd dump the mirror if you put them in haha! how is he doing btw??

He is awesome. A little timid when I come around, but I am sure it will change. Thank you all for your replies. I have no intention of feeding my FH anything from the ground. Please keep in mind that I am in NJ...

I feed my Flowerhorn - Dainichi pellets, earthworms ( breeding in a container in my basement ), Night Crawlers that I get from tackle shops and the occasional guppy ( that I also breed ). Since I know where my live food is from, it is safe. In the wild fish eat LIVE food, so why wouldn't you feed them the occasional live food? *note I said fish in the wild, not FH...

I thought a found a great spot behind my church near a retention pond. There were happy frogs, night crawlers, and abundant life of all sorts abounded there. I fed my Oscar contaminated worms for weeks before it rained and I saw about a half mm of oily sludge on top of puddles in that spot. He's fine. I don't get food there anymore. But it's a lesson for the learning for sure.
