It makes good mechanical filtration. Keep your water Crystal clear. It's crap for biological because it will clog and gum up before it cultures to any extent.
Only useful purpose is mechanical particle filtration.

I've used the stuff for years inside of 2262 filters. Pack them. It traps so much debris that it clogs up with Brown slime. Flow reduces, stinks like death eventually. I always replaced it within weeks. At most a month.
That's less time than media typical takes to culture or "cycle"
It traps particles. Large and small. Some start to rot or break down. You'll want to remove that from your system to keep water quality high. You'll likely replace it regularly. It's not like a sponge you can rinse out easily and reuse. It has no real integrity. IMO best as highly effective, disposable, mechanical filtration.
Try multiple applications. I think you'll come to the same conclusion.
