Fiki Prima

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have never known a napoleons wrasse to be sold anywhere in recent times.
Me either. I've been seraching for almost a year for the species and have had no leads whatsoever. I am currently checking the legality of them in Indonesia.
True Napoleon wrasse aren't sold in the pet trade, I believe they are a protected species. But other members of the family are such as broomtail wrasses and redbreast wrasse.
That sounds correct to me. I will check their status in Indonesia, and we will see if he's got a legal fish or not. I'll also go through and try to identify the wrasse to see what it is - as, like you said, all other species of the genus can be found in the pet trade.

Well boys, we may have a good case on our hands to get this guy in some serious trouble.

First up, the wrasse in the video is most definitely a juvenile napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus). Looking at the facial patterning and yellow margins on the tail will show that there is no other fish that it could possibly be.

Second, check out this article:
http://blog.nus.edu.sg/lsm4262species/2013/04/16/humphead-wrasse-cheilinus-undulatus/comment-page-1/

When you read the article, use control-f to search "Indonesia" and read the part that comes up. For those who don't want to open the article, I will post the important part here:

"Permits are only awarded to researchers who capture the humphead wrasse for scientific or mariculture development purposes and also to artisanal fishers"

Fiki Prima MOST CERTAINLY does not fall under any of those categories. Meaning he is in possession of an illegal fish. I'll ask him again where he got it. He's not likely to get in a ton of trouble if he purchased it from somewhere (but the person that sold it to him will), but if he caught it himself - boom, we got him.

Not only is that terrible,u can probably get him in trouble with the law if he collected those corals himself.
Probably not as there may not be any such laws where he lives.

Oompa, don't get me wrong as I commend you for your level of concern and for what you are trying to accomplish here. That guy needs to have to answer to someone. It's just that I have little faith in wildlife conservation/enforcement in certain parts of the world.
