Hello, I saw these catfish for sale and was wondering if anyone had any info on them i.e. growth rate, feeding, water params, or personal experiences. I know they have capabilities of getting to huge sizes. Are these the false piraiba catfish? After shipping I would be spending $135, is that a good price for a 2-3" fish? Also if anyone knows where I could get a larger fish around 6-8" for a fair price please let me know. Thanks a lot.

I'm about 99% sure that's a capapretum, not a Fila. True filas are incredibly rare and go for well over $135. I think I remember the only person on here with a true Fila bought it for around $2,000.

I've only seen true paraiba available once or twice the last couple years, and they weren't cheap lol. I'm not familiar enough with the species to make a 100% id, but judging by the larger spots on the body, I would guess this to be a brachyplatystoma capapretum.

Okay thanks everyone I didn't think it was a true piraiba so it's good to have some reassurance. Any info on the other species that you think this one is? Most importantly growth rate if anyone knows?

Capas still get quite large, around 3.5' and from what I've heard grow fairly fast.

the guy selling this fish with the photo supplied swears that his fisherman with a hundred years of experience know which one is which. I can tell you though, my fisherman know the difference, which have also worked on the river for many years. And I've personally been down to several South American countries to search for these fish. This one I caught in Suriname

Here are Brazilian ones I imported before, looks different, but look at the length of the barbels and color

Wow that's really cool thanks for sharing! I've seen your name all over these forums and it's great to see you commenting on one of my posts! Would you happen to have any of the brachyplatystoma species available in hand? I've always had an interest in them and would love to buy one. If you had any info to share on them it would be very appreciated too. Thanks a lot.

The fish in the first post is a capapretum. A rule of thumb for these when they're young is that if the spots are roughly the size of the eye or smaller, it's a filamentosum. If the spots are 2x the size of the eye or larger, it's a capapretum. This is really only useful up to 15" or so.
