Hello, I saw these catfish for sale and was wondering if anyone had any info on them i.e. growth rate, feeding, water params, or personal experiences. I know they have capabilities of getting to huge sizes. Are these the false piraiba catfish? After shipping I would be spending $135, is that a good price for a 2-3" fish? Also if anyone knows where I could get a larger fish around 6-8" for a fair price please let me know. Thanks a lot.
As stated above by experts it is a capapretum, I think too. Exactly as you already called it in your OP - the false piraiba.
Little is known on them from long-term keepers. They are rare. On top of that, it almost looks like 99% of them disappear after some months from the purchase. Probably perish. People stop reporting anyway.
The biggest capa that I know from personal interaction is that of member SirCatfish (Mike, NYC). It is 2'. I am guessing it is ~2-3 years old.
They like soft acidic water but appear adaptable. The best diet I think would be whole frozen-thawed fishes of the swallowable size. Periodically soaked in say VitaChem or stuffed with high quality pellets like Hikari mascivore.
A while back, I saw them by ECZS at $70 before shipping, but your price does not sound too bad with shipping.
