I am not sure this would be helpful in grown fish. Mostly in juvie. I will see what info I can track down. Also not sure the spots are reliable either. It's very tough to distinguish. I will see what lundberg's input is if he replies(usually not during the holidays.)
 
If you can,Cliff, please split off the capapretum discussion off of this thread.

We can ask Jools to specify.

The spots are gone on sub-adults and adults of both species. They appear useless in babies and juvies anyway for distinction purposes... or so the experts currently are saying.

I'll definitely be on the edge of my chair to hear from Dr. Lundberg.

Done and done!!! I have sent a message to Dr. Lundberg. Seeing as his real specialty within siluriformes is Pimelodidae, and Ictaluridae I should think his input will be most useful. I too am baffled at the comparison of these species. I will also search for the study that split the two species recently. :) I am assuming that is what Jools used for his identification as well. I'm just not quick to jump on the whisker band wagon. If you compare pics of them as juvie vs. adult you will see that the whiskers are not proportionate to their body length. Meaning that their whiskers are longer as juvie in comparison to BL than they are as an adult. Seems that capapretum seems to have about the same proportions as filamentosum as an adult. Seems to be about the same as juvie as well. Even the streamers as well. Body portions seem nearly identical. Honestly I need to reread that study so I can see for myself why they even classified them as separate species lol. Been a few years now.
 
TBTB if you can provide a link to Jools, and post a link here if you start a new thread that would be valuable as well. :)
