If I were you I would do a cool monster community. Get a Black Arowana for the top of the tank get a Datnoid and a Cichla for the middle (Kelberi or Piquiti due to the size of your aquarium) and possible get a Potamotrygon Hystrix for the bottom and then you have a really cool tank in my opinion

Haha this would be nice man but I am not that wealthy to be affording these kinds of awesome fish

Well my 180 will soon be empty as my RTC is going in the pool as soon as I can get water conditions and everything stable so what ever I get will pretty much have the tank to its self

If this is the case you could have a jardini and try and raise it with tankmates from a smaller age to try keep aggresion down to a min in future (im currently doing this with a 6"jar with the one thing my old jar hated with a passion "silver fish" so he's in with tinfoils atm), your saving grace is you've got space both in the 180 for growout then in your pond eventually
My first aro was a silver but once I got a jardini I never looked back there quality fish if you can train them to feed on pellet and play nice ;) , obviously thats only my opinion you may love silvers like I love jardini :D

Is pellet training an issue for most jars? My little guy hits anything that touches the surface almost immediately. His only tankmate is an armored cat that stays hidden about 23hrs and 59minutes of the day. I'd be concerned about aggression with a more active or vulnerable tankmate.

Yeah my silver used to eat pellets too. What makes jars more desirable? Colors? Personality? Or both? Or maybe something else I need to know

I personally prefer the shape of jars to silvers (more like that of the Asian aro's) , they very rarely get drop eye if at all , the colours that can be achived with correct environment and diet are stunning , as for personality I suppose it depends on the fish they are more aggressive than silvers in general but will except tankmates if introduced from a young age and with enough space once bigger , there's a few shots of my 22" beast that i lost few months back in my album he had quality example of jardini have a look let me know what you think

pellet training can be an issue at times but there's ways to trick them into it ;)
