Filling fish tank with....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since I have 3 tanks warm water runs out quickly in the winter time. I pretty much fill them up with cold water but i do not let temp drop more than 5 or 6 degrees. After that I stop and wait for the temp to rise. The drop starts to stress them a little and that is why you see those type of reactions.

I don't know if you have a Menards around you, but I work there and we have the Y adapters for like 5 bucks. super cheap way to fix your problem :)

went to rona bought a y connection with valves for adjusting flow etc. bought two hoses to attach to the cold and hot where my washing machine connect. They had this i would say sample hose in this bin that reminds them of which hose to put in there when restocking. i grabbed it assuming it just wasnt in a bag that the other one went in. When i went up to the cashier she asked me if it was an example of the one i had at home( me being the cheap bastard) nodded and i ended up getting two hoses for the price of one genius lol

gotta admit the y connect made this a breeze i dont even think the water lowered more than two degrees. way much better than what it was before thanks a lot!!

Just to add to the discussion, for those whose hot water comes from a tank, and you don't want to add all those dissolved metal ions into your tanks.
What I do is just repeatedly boil a kettle and add that boiled kettle water to the tank as I'm filling up with cold. Been doing this for ages, and my temp never drops more than 2 degrees C during water changes. Just have to run the cold in a bit slower in the winter (to give a chance to boil more kettle fulls) as the cold water is that much colder.

Hook up a wye hose and run both hot and cold into the hose

Hmm if i had a more practical way of doing what you suggested i would attempt it but running up and down stairs with boiled water in a 5 L container wouldnt fit the bill in time and the extra energy lol. This way i just drain the tank via suction and wait for it to go down half way then run the water from my washer and it only takes about 2-4 minutes to fill it with water about the same temperature. I add prime in before adding the water
