If you wanna polish your water do foam, floss, then biomax to hold the floss down. Filters your water very nicely, only the trade off being you'll have to replace the floss fairly frequently as it traps everything. Solution just buy a bag of pillow stuff from your local craft or fabric shop its cheap and you get a ton.

Why do you keep your biomax on bottom? It will get choked with wastes as that is where the doodoo enters the filter...

Your logic is absolutely sound. I thought the exact same thing, but nc_nutcase insisted that the pros outweighed the cons, so I tried it. It has not reduced my bio capacity at all!! It works great for people like me who are constantly changing the foam blocks. I dont have to remove the whole media carrier every time I swap blocks, so the biomax stays submerged & the BB are left alone. I still remove the whole media carrier once a month to dump the big crud from the settling chamber & rinse the biomax in old tankwater, though. The bag at the bottom actually doesn't get very dirty & having the foam blocks on top eliminates that bypass you get from the left corner of the AC's media carrier. Note: I do use larger biomax bags than the ones that came with the filters... Helps raise the foam up closer to the lid.
