Film on water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'd rather have bubbles in my tank and/or a bit of splash noise than have my fish not have enough oxygen in the water due to a film.

Did you read the entire thread or just the last couple of posts? I never said I wouldn't be following the other pieces of advice, just that I don't like bubblers. I also said that I was going to be adding more filtration to solve the problem.

I deal with this on my live plant tank. Its normally about the time i need to change my carbon for some reason. but i run a canister filter on that tank. i also had a similar issue in my 100 gal because the water flow was only on one side so i simply added a sponge filter on the dead side and it took care of the entire problem. the bubbles are a little noisy tho. But i like the sound.

I have noticed that the film was primarily forming on the side that only had the HOT Mag Return. The other side has the Canister return and two biowheels so it stays in constant motion.
I've adjusted the return on the side with less agitation to increase the surface movement. I'm still planning on adding another filter to the system as well as tinkering with a skimmer setup. Until I get the new filter, I've stepped up my water changes to every other day doing a small amount instead of larger changes twice a week.
Thanks for all the suggestions and confirming some of the things I had thought of already.

i would just add more surface agitation. all my tank look like a river on the surface. keeps oxygen high and film off surface :)

That is how the left side of my tank looks. The additional return from another filter and readjusting the return direction on my existing filter will help accomplish this on the right side of the tank.

Sometimes surface agitation won't work. This is the best problem solver:

I have one of them on order. I think it was like 5 bucks online. It should be here about the same time as my UV sterilizer (unrelated purchase).

do they make a surface skimmer for an fx5?

i used to get ALOT of surface scum when i fed smelt. those are some nasty things to feed.
especially to my jardini who decides to maul them before eating

From my research, a lot of these skimmers are universal.
