Because I have 4 rays now and they are s@#$ machienes, I have an Eheim Pro2 And iI love it, but I really dont want to shell out that much for another Eheim, and the FX5 looks like a very good filter for about 1/2 the price of the new Eheims.

You want big, go big

Eheim 2260
US $ 281
(www.petblvd.com)
# 630gph
# Filter volume 4.8gal

Fluval FX5
US $ 290
(www.petmeister.com)
# 607gph
# Filter volume: 5.28 gal, BUT only 1.5 gallons media of your choice (rest is foam)

Bottom line: Same price, Eheim allows you to use the media you want to use, to boost your biofiltration. I think that's exactly what you want when you have big poopers in your tank

I know, I should have joined the other debate ... but that was about the Eheim Pro 3, and I am biased since I own one ;) Looking back, I should have gotten the 2260.

Eheim supporters typically have a different color sky than the rest of us

something about paying more for both media and filters and somehow associating that with getting more

I do notice they are always the first to bad mouth another product and typically throw rocks in their glass houses

Im now totally biased...I hate all things Eheim - I need to get bumper stickers and tee shirts made up right away

Ducati, I see you like to laugh ;)

As you can read above, the filters I listed are about the same price, so that argument of your is invalid. Give and take 50 bucks. Choosing your own media has IMO great advatanges over filtering thru foam. tank90 has a huge bioload, so it's only rational to optimize the filter for maximal biofiltration. I am a perfectionist and want it my way. I like to customize. I would never ride anything but a Harley and I would never get anything but an Eheim. I have before, and I would never do it again.

:D Our different screen names say it all ...

As compared to you, my view of the world is not domiated by hate. It's love :hearts:

Oh yeah...I can feel the love in here...
as for the "best cannister" debate, all have good points and, I for one like the fact that we all have choice in which to choose what we think is the best...
Just like the old Chevy vs Ford, Harley vs Rice, Lincoln vs Cadillac, or tic-tac-toe...it's a draw :headbang2

HarleyK,

At least you saw through the scarasm and didnt take it to heart.....But dont even get me started on the benefits (if any) of having a Harley LOL

I would truly like to see the specifications now on the 2260. Because I would like to compare either the pump output without load and with load similar to how Fluval states it (950 GPH without and 607 GPH with)....I doubt Eheims pump is close to 950 Gph unloaded.

Eheims media prices are priced too high, and thats were they get you. The price of the Fluval media and the entire filter is definately Fluvals advantage. $50 or more is still a significant savings...

Compared to the other Eheim Models at least this model is priced somewhat competively, but its still in the FX5's favor. Build quality is flat out in the FX5's favor - the hoses, connectors (quick disconnect 45 degree elbows, etc) in my opinion.
Based on how the motor or pump sits on top of the Eheim, I wonder how many tanks it will fit under? The FX5 fits perfectly (with room to spare) underneath the Oak stand for a Perfecto 72 x 30 x 24 tank package.

Bar none the Fx5 is better than Eheim.... :headbang2 :headbang2

Ducati,

The stats are here

http://www.eheim.com/classic.htm

metric, sorry. I am not sure if I'd prefer a high flow rate. I wouldn't want a Ferrari engine in a tractor, and I wouldn't want a diesel in a sports car. To me, a filter must have power, not speed. Other way around for a power head, which faces little resistance. Reason being that bacteria have a preferred flow rate for optimal development. If the flow rate is too high, your biofiltration will not reach optimal levels. But maybe the Fluval has a throttle like the new Eheims, and then my point is mute.

The 2260 is the classic model (literally), no fancy extras, a filter for nothing but filtration. I think the modern filters' disadvantage is the sacrifice of filter media volume for convenience. The FX5 tries to make up for that by using foam wherever you can't put media. I am not sure if that is the ultimate solution. As said above, if I had to do it again, I would go very basic and get the 2260. Old school, I guess.

Height: 57 cm (22.5''). That would fit underneath my tank ...

Above I mentioned $50 give or take because I am not sure if I found the cheapest websites. In my comparison, the Eheim was actually cheaper. But in the tank category we are talking about, I am not sure if a few bucks make a difference.

The build quality is, and here I disagree with you, in Eheim's favor. I stated elsewhere that I have an old Eheim 2211, which has been running 27/4 for 16 years now. Not a single problem. I like that. It's not the gadgets, it's the motor and parts I am talking about. You talk about turnable connectors, I consider that convenience category, not quality category.

Bottom line: The filters are about equal regarding the stats, but they differ in media capacity and comfort of usage. Let's not get into quality here. It differs by personal experience. Feel free to open a poll in this forum to get a general idea.

As zennzzo stated, we have a choice. For me, there is simply no substitute for displacement ... in bike engines nor in filter media capacity ;)

You ride a Ducati and run an FX5, I ride a Harley and run an Eheim - as different as we can be, we share great hobbies

Ps
You should put a few pics in your gallery. What tank do you run your FX5 on, and what fish?
