I began the building of the sump/filter system for my upcoming 300 gallon tank. I may be overdoing it, is that even possible with a ray tank?

I have the 100 gallon stock tank, inside are (6) 22.5x24.5 bakery trays filled with a total of 796 scrubbies. The trays sit quite securely on the moldings of the side of the tank holding them roughly 4-5 inches off the bottom. I have begun fabrication of two plexi pieces, one that will hold the two 7"x16" 100 micron filter socks at one end, and the other that is the drip tray that will sit inside of a 7th bakery tray on top of the scrubbies. Two pumps, one that will be pushing roughly 1500gph up to the tank and another pushing 500-1000gph, circulating internally to the sump, moving water back over the scrubbies. I'll continue to post pictures of the progress as it unfolds. I had originally planned on putting the heaters in this as well but have since decided that I may try placing them in the overflows in the tank. Of course I won't know if they will even fit there until I have the tank.

The heaters should still fit in the sump. Seems like a simple straight forward approach it shouldn't give you too much of a headache :). I can't think of a reason they would not be but I would triple check to make sure the plastic bakery trays are safe for use just to be safe.

Look forward to updates

I thought about questioning if the trays were safe as well, though like you I can't see why they wouldn't be. Being from the food industry, I'd think they'd have to meet certain criteria. Regardless, I have no idea who I'd ask?? lol

If the bakery trays meet food standards they should absolutely be fine, they are probably made out of the same stuff as the sump actually. From a fish keepers standard that thing looks awesome......from a girls standard.....it's so pretty :)

I think you got this sump thing totally under control, try not to over think it.

And on the heaters....I don't really think it matters a whole heck of a lot where you put them as long as they are ray safe and they keep the fish at the desired temp.

It is impossible to overdo filtration period in my experience lol.

Make a plexiglas cover for the sump to keep evaporation and heat loss down. I would also insulate if you get power loss regularly or if in a cold climate. Nice simple solution. If the pumps don't suck it up you could have a load of k1 bobbing around in there for extra bio.

I plan on wrapping it if needed, I have access to a supply of duct wrap at work. Also figuring on some kind of cover as well, though I may use plastic ceiling tile cut to shape. Cheaper and can be cut with a utility knife.

You don't thing that 8-9 cubic feet of bio is enough?

I have all the pieces fabricated for the drip tray, I just need to solvent weld them together. Once complete, pics of it will also be up.

Here are some pics of the completed plexi mount/holder for the filter socks. It sits on the molded rim inside the stock tank on one end and is cut out to match the shape of the bakery tray on the other. Two holes, one for each sock.

I like the bakery tray idea.
