Hey everyone. a few months ago we purchased a 240g with stand off craigslist. It came with a magnum 350 canister that we quickly replaced with a rena xp4. It was advertised up to 265g at 450gph but we are not satisfied with the job that its been doing. It gets decent flow but seems like we need to clean it every week to keep that up.

We are stocked with one juvenile (12") rtc, 1 12" oscar, 5-6" JD, 5" jewel cichlid, 4" leaf fish and 12" pleco. We know the 240 is small for the rtc but we will be building a pond for him in the near future, that is not our issue so please leave that alone.

Just trying to figure out the best filtration system. We are thinking of a few options just wanted to get some input from you guys first. We are looking at 3 different options:

1) 2 separate canister filters. We would keep the xp4 and pick up something like the fluval fx5 and run them on separate ends of the tank.

2) 2 canister filters in series (if possible). was thinking about running pvc from output on 1 filter to input to the other. Just don't know if this has been or can be done.

3) I'm thinking will be our best bet. Looking into running an external water pump to a pond filter. Figured this will give us the best turnover (1200-1500gph) and be fairly economical to setup.

Sump is out of the question as our stand is too low to make that possible. If you have any advice or recommendations please let me know.

How is a sump out of the question? If an xP4 can fit under the stand (just assuming), then it should fit a sump under it as well. Pond filters are pretty tall as well. Anyways, the Pond filter would be a good option or you can get a Fx5. I've seen a 240g with 4 Canister filters on it and that seemed to work real well.

The canister is not under the tank, we have it to the side as it's the only place it will fit. We are hoping to build some sort of cover that can support a 10 gallon we use for the occasional live foods buy. The only reason I'm thinking pond filter over the fluval is because from the little research I've done, it seems I can put together a pond filter capable of almost twice the flow for just a little more. That, and i feel it will have a smaller footprint over 2 separate filters. The fish we have in there can get a bit messy and I'd rather be a little over filtered than be dissatisfied again. I guess i am just looking for confirmation that this would be a viable solution. Was looking at the pond master 18 mag drive pump, and still looking for a decent canister that will handle the flow rate. If anyone has used the pond master or has any recommendations of canisters to use, I would really appreciate some help with this one.

a canister i would go with a FX5.on my 210 i have 1 eheim 2262,1FX5,1 AC110 and a cascade 1000.the FX5 for myself is x10 easier to clean than the 2262,less than 1/2 the cost and takes up alot less space.

I'm just worried that 1 fx5 is not going to do the job. We are planning on picking up another 120-150 for our fahaka and were thinking about using the xp4 on that tank. right now we have to clean the xp4 every few days which is a bit of a pain. Just trying to find the best solution.

For the Money you can't beat the Fx5 as far as canisters go , I just bought a few on Amazon they was 214 each and they had free shipping

Well...personally, I'd go with at least a couple of Fx5s for a 240g. 1 Fx5 would work depending on your stock. Once you remove the RTC do you plan on getting anymore fish? Most pond filters are meant more for Biological Filtration more than Mechanical. If you're looking for both, I'd just go with an Fx5.
