Filter for a mantis?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you use sand as substrate make sure its all settled before adding it and eventaully it will probably be killed by the sand unless you clean the sand out weekly

Mantis are cool

I say forget a filter. Get tons of Live Rock. And then get a skimmer that does 100gallons plus for the tank! Octopus skimmers are good. And that should be enough for mantis tank. And if you want to upgrade all you need is bigger tank skimmer wont have to change.

Ive done research on them and plan on getting one after my 30gal octopus tank.

But here some stuff I have read.
Never add iodine in the water.
You can make a sump if you would like. But your intank filter will probably be ruined by sand after a while.

And Idt you will really have to be worried about him breaking the glass. Not many do I hear just when one is overly excited at feeding time

That's called the Berlin system. LR max and lots of circulation with a great skimmer. I ran a Berlin system once. It was very succesful. ;)

I think your idea might work just clean the filter out weekly by removing any sand in it. To keep it from breaking

I kept a Peacock in a 15g but it outgrew that tank & wound up in my 20g fuge. Even with 3" of sand for him to burrow in, tons of LR, powerhead, a good skimmer (Backpac) & even a HOB filled with rubble, I had a difficult time keeping the nitrate <100, with weekly 90% WC. Until I started dosing with vitamin C. Then it stayed <10 all the time.

^ vitamin c tablets? They ones for human consumption?
