Those are perfect, they are what I use in most of my setups. I prefer the hydro pro line of sponges as they do not occlude.
 
I use the same filter you have on my Crayfish tank when they were babies.

I used to do the same thing, although maybe its coz i used one with a very fine mesh it caused it to block the flow of water extremely quick and i was having to clean it once a day min. to make sure there was enough flow...
 
I use sponge material to block the HOB intake. Not a problem at all. I buy the same sponge you use for Aquaclear filters. Just cut it the way you want and put it on like a glove. I have both a HOB and sponge filter in my tank for crays and shrimp.
 
I use the Hydor II in a 10gal, which is a 20gal. sponge filter. It has more surface area, so I just cut the clear pastic bubble tube a bit. Works like a charm!
 
i just used a piece of spunge covering it. the baby shrimp would just walk right over it and not get stuck
