I'll just make the statement that it is far more prudent to give advice that will be effective at most any skill level, Then to give advice that works for you based off of personal experience and trial and error. Not saying you are wrong at all, just that the OP is still developing his fish keeping habits and experimenting with frequency can be done once that solid foundation is set.

i 'm just relating what works .. what i know doesn't work is overcleaning(ammonia spikes) and overfiltering (wasted money )... everything i advised to do is easy ..proven and cost effective.. you just have to do the work.. there are other ways to maintain tanks .. but none are *more*effective.. as a matter of fact every successful fishkeeper uses some variation of my system.. just the #'s change a bit..

sigh all you want .. you don't know my system and obviously i have been doing something right .. the need for overkill media is a disease on this website .. you guys spend way too much money on filtration for my taste , but hey , more power to you.. all i know is i have low nitrates(less than 20ppm) and zero ammonia about 98% of the time (we all know that occasionally bad stuff happens) .. how you gonna argue with that? i also understock rather than overstock, that's another reason i don't have many issues...
Im sighing because you felt the need to take the time to shoot my friendly advice to someone else down because you have a different point of view. If thats your prerogative then thats fine, no complaints if you keep your water clean and your fish happy. But personally, I take care of my fish in the same way I take care of my dog, in that I give them the best possible life I can. Ive never seen someone get heated over advice on how to go the extra mile to take proper care of your pets.. especially when it wasnt even directed to them.. but theres a first time for everything.

Overfiltration in the levels I suggested is not wasted money, it is proven to keep the water cleaner for longer in between water changes and breaks down waste faster, keeping water clear and looking better. Its like buying a top of the line computer over a basic model, it costs more but the specs are better. Some people feel like its worth it, some dont, but just as you give your advice on what works for you, so do others, only we dont bash other people for advice that does work. Not to mention pristine water is proven to lead to faster growth, and longer fish life. Also, I do tank set ups and maintenance for people in my free time. To date, Ive never had a complaint about the extra mile I have people go to take care of their fish. Believe me I warn them that what i suggest is not the cheapest option and that I believe in optimum care. But I have gotten dozens of calls and emails back thanking me for how happy their fish are and how beautiful and vibrant their tanks look. Theres keeping fish, and then theres loving fish.

your obviously ripping on what i'm doing , which is advocating *proper care * rather than spending more money , i'm semi impressed by your "service" record.. but the bottom line once again, *that you haven't addressed in a response* , there is no correlation between overfiltration and "better" fishkeeping.. you call it "loving your fish".. what do you call 0 ammonia and nitrates less than 20ppm, bad care ? the system i use is *proven* , you don't need to overspend, and has less time between service to the tank , so you have more interaction with the fish at close quarter, thus the ability to catch problems sooner..i'm happy you do tank maintenance for others , it shows an interest in learning .. it's obvious you are trying.. one thing you will learn in the future : theories and models are cute , as is playing on internet forums and being an "internet expert " that can regurgitate "knowledge" .. it doesn't replace 1st hand experience of decades or having fish live for 10+ years in your care , that's my bragging rights , i'll put that up against anybody on here ..this got started by me saying : "if you are trying to keep your tank clean using filters *you are doing it wrong*".. which is a 100% true statement .. i'll repeat :you keep water clean through *water changes * period end of story , every long term fishkeeper (probably including yourself) knows this is true.. that's all the discussion i ever intended to have.. but make no mistake , i'm done now , no need to respond.. you can learn or have a pissing match with a ghost..peace chief
