I know this isnt the right place for filter stuff but most of us ray keepers keep massive filtration systems and are always looking for something different. I came across this stuff here and might be able to get my hands on a little bit. doesnt have as much surface area as i would like but might be perfect for a 55 or 35gal drum.

let me know what you think and should i use it as a trickle or a bioreactor? the new tank im trying to finish up will have 2 35 gal drums on it and i can add a third very easy. one is a bioball tower. the other is a k1 bioreactor. i guess i could toss some in each or just make it its own. but there again tower or reactor? or none at all and figure something else out for the third drum.

let me know what you guys think.

Holy cow! 11" dia x 3"tall media....MONSTA!

Still pretty big. Probably won't get as much surface area compared to smaller medias in a same size chamber. Like you said, the void between the plates. Very good read though.

I'm not saying that. I think it's worth a try.

so ken what do you think i should set it up as. tower or bioreactor? im thinking tower as it would take alot to get that amount moving.

might also be good top fill for k1 to keep the k1 away from the outlet as well.

A trickle type setup would be much more feasible than trying to do a rolling bio-reactor. The reactor container would need to be very large and would require quite a bit of air to get the desired effect.

Looking over that second brochure I would try HD Q-PAC® , NUPAC® , or LANPAC® in a trickle tower. I didn't see specs on the HD Q-PAC® but it may require a slightly reduce flow rate compared to the others just from the looks of it.
