Filter Media

Forgot to mention that its going on a 55g with another ac 70 that will be filled with sponges. The one I bought is going to be filled with biomax.

I just ordered an ac 70 and instead of the standard media that comes with it I purchased fluval 500g biomax (ceramic rings) do you think it would have been better to order the stuff that is made for it? Its like a cylinder capsule shape.

Bioriongs perfectly work out with AC 70 and 110, actually it is biorings what I have running in my AC110 so give it a go, just take them out and rinse them good in water of the same tank apart to keep them from clogging, I do it every 30 days.

true but if you give ceramics a good rinse in tank water when cleaning sponges they do well. i prefer sintered glass products like the eheim and seachem products. either way, the plastic trays are about as effective as the plastic bioballs. K1 isnt cheap and its hard to know how well it wprks in a canister as you cant see it boil and it may not get the O2 reccomended in setups like a bioreactor

I partially agree with you.

Eventhough you keep rinsing your biorings, eventually you will have to get rid of them and buy some more, it is not a good idea to keep working with the same biorings more than two years, K1 may be more expensive but in the long run it turns out cheaper. I have talked to very experienced people such as forist that goes as @Uraujoey and they asure K1 works very well in canisters too.

Cheers.

Im just wondering what kind of media you guys are using in your canister filters, as far as keeping your water clear and keeping your parameters in check.

I usually use HOB's such as the Aqua Clear for mechanical(polishing) filtration..........But when it comes to canisters, I usually fill the whole thing up with Bio_max....I take the sponge out from the top level and also fill it with Bio-Max(or its equivalint).............

My canisters are filled with ceramic rings and pot scrubbies for bio, and I use quilt batting for the mech. I never rinse the batting out, just toss it and replace since it's so cheap.

I'm running two CF500UV on my 75. I have a blue sponge on the bottom along with white floss. On the second from the bottom tray I have more floss. The third tray has 1500 grams of ceramic & the top tray is loaded with pot scrubbers.

I've been using gold lable hydrocorn in my hobs, canisters and sump net pot plant filters with poly floss as a mechanical for about eight months now with good results. The hydocorn is a red/ black man made cinder like product, out of sintered clay.. It's used for substrate in food production aquaponics. I use it because it's cheaper to get hear than real sintered glass media...I was just wondering about the lifespan mentioned earlier for the sintered glass. I always assumed it would last indefinitely as long as it was kept "clean"
