Does anyone out there modify their already manufactued filters? For example, I don't use the media container in my Magnum 350 canister filter. I have it filled with bio-balls, a bag of Perigen and a foam filter pad.
Examples, photos etc?

Can you please put up a picture of your Mag 350 with the bioballs in it? I would like to see it. I might do the same thing but would like to know if you have any luck using the bioballs totallt submerged? Although they are not designed to be used like that I would have to speculate that there is alot of surface area for the "good" bacteria to grow on so why not? Welp' lookin' forward to the picture.

i made a fluval powerhead pump a water fall

when my tanks get cloudy i put a powerhead (fluval) in there with carbon.

The Magnum I did this to also has the Bio-Wheels hooked up at the rim of the tank. This Magnum also has a twin that's running right next to it. So everything's cool load wise. I just thought I'd give 'er a little boost!

I'll see what I can do about the photos though...no promises. :)

I modify every filter I buy. I usually stuff canisters with foam airconditioner filters. They are increadibly cheap and durable. Also all power filters can be operated with the large sponges made by aquaclear. The have many times the surface area as the traditional cartridges. I do not use carbon however, becasue I do massive water changes every week. It is more efficient that way, as well as cheaper.

I do the same but tend to leave the original loading of carbon in forever.

I add ceramic bio-media rings to every filter I have, wherever I can. Then leave a little bit of room for chemi-pure. :)
