Not sure about ehiems, but when i've had my cannister running for a while then un-plug it and go straight to cleaning it, i notice the magnet propeller does get a bit hot too...

i just figure out the way to take out the inpellers. It was super hot to the touch. I cleaned it out and cooled it with cold water. was it supposed to be hot? The cap was hotter than usual too. Are there only supposed to be 3 pieces to take out?

I don't see any wear.

Youve had this filter for three years and have never cleaned the impellar? No it shouldnt be hot if it is running, cooling of the motor happens from the water flowing through it, so if the impellar is not turning and moving water it's gonna heat up. Should be two pieces, the impellar assembly and the shaft, maybe some rubber gromets at the ends of the shaft.

Put it together and see if it runs, though you may need to let the motor cool first.

It could have been running dry, if it was not able to start/prime after power came back.let motor and impeller cool down, if media is clogged it will over work the motor.for future run a few foam filters with air pumps as back up.they hold BB. I always want 2 filters on all my tanks

Take it apart and give it a quick clean. Last time I cleaned one of my filters it wouldnt start up either. Took it apart again, gave a quick rinse, and it worked like new again.

Hopfuly you get it working soon.

These type of pump motors are nothing more then an electromagnet. The motor itself almost never goes bad, unless the impeller was stuck so long that the windings in the motor welded. I think you have something jamming the impeller. If you remove the motor, impeller removed, and plug it in if it doesn't get hot the motor is good and you need to find the cause of a stuck impeller. If the motor gets hot it is fried. If the impeller is not in it and it is plugged in you won't damage it. Good luck!

I love Ehiems and have been running three 2217s on my 180 gallon for the last five years. The impeller consists of a ceramic shaft, a magnet with impeller, and two rubber grommets. Check that the rubber grommets are rubbery and not cracked, handle the ceramic shaft carefully when you rinse it off as they are fragile, and clean the magnet and impeller. Once you do this make sure that when you reconnect the filter to the tank you give it a good minute to fill up all the way before restarting it. It should run, and in the future I would have surge protectors on all your tank stuff. My house has the old glass fuses in its braker box and its not uncommon for me to have surges especially during brown outs and black outs. Protect your electrical equipment or you'll be buying new stuff very often.

YES!! Got it fixed! Hats off for ALL you guys! Thanks for the fast helpful support. Took me 3 hours to "fix" this filter. You guys were right. I guess it was a faulty propeller. I reassembled the motors around 5 times and then it magically started to work. Guess I can return my $90 dollar filter I just got!

Nah, keep the new one as a backup. Better safe than sorry!

I've had filters go dry during power surges and do exactly what you've described before. They'd get really hot and stop running. Mine would always start running again if I unplugged them, filled them with water, let them cool for a couple of hours and turned them back on.

Since I see that you've gotten this straightened out, I'm gonna bounce this over to Setup and Filtration.
