Filter Overkill

I have a 45 gallon tank that will be housing a green spotted puffer once its finish cycling.
Here is the thing though, I have an HOB filter that does 400gph and is rated for a 90 gallon aquarium... I know puffers can be messy, which is why i opted for the the high output filter which could handle a higher bioload, i'm just concerned it might be too much now...

So my question is, is this filter going to hurt my puffer in anyway?

Never kept puffers but with cichlids its common to double up on filtration. On my 125 I have 2 filters rated at 100g each and another rated at 110g for a total of 1180g/hr.

Nah he should be fine. People easily go and put 2 fx5's on 150gallon tanks with no adverse affects, a slightly more powerful hob is no different. Unless hes a fish who doesn't like the current then you'll just have to find a way to break it up some that's the only problem I could see with it.

no such thing as over filtration imo. and im one of those that have 2 fx5's on my 150g. on my 90 i used to have i had a fx5 and a 404.

i have 2 hobs on my 40 gallon..between them in doing 500 gph..^_^ overkill? pphh as long as your fish can take the flow there is no such thing!

General rule is take what the filter is rated for and cut that in half.

For a normal freshwater fish that wouldn't be any trouble at all. For a Green Spotted Puffer that amount of water movement is nothing. Basically consider them saltwater fish for how much current they can handle (mainly since as adults they are saltwater fish).
