I have a running 40 gallon tank with an eheim 2213 in it for my ray pups. Recently, i see that the single 2213 isnt doing enough filtration and i want to add a 2217 to it. How would i do it? Ive never added on filters before as ive always started off with way more than whats "recommended". Would the bacteria from the 2213 be enough to start the 2217 or would it recycle? Or do i have to cycle the 2217 in like a bucket or something and then add it in once its cycled? Any advice would help. Thanks.

add the 2217 to the tank and run it alongside the 2213 for a couple of weeks to seed it. i personally would leave them running together at least a month but probably 2 which would probably be better seeing as your dealing with rays.

just put it on and run them both..

Run them along side each other, the cycled one will cycle the second one for you

so for sure the 2213 will be enough to get the 2217 started without recycling my tank right?

you will be running a new filter on an already mature tank with a mature filter. the 2217 will seed no problem at all. but you have to run them both at least for a while but you may like the results 2 filters gives you.

Thanks alot to everyone. I was planning to just use both filters anyways as you cant really overkill filtration. Just needed to know if it would seed without having like an amonia spike. Thanks again.

It is my understanding that adding another filter won't start a minicycle. However, if you removed the old filter when you add the new filter, that would probably create a minicycle.

ooo okay, got it, thanks all.

If you want to use both filters, just add the new one. Nothing special to do. If you just want to use the 2217 though, I think the easiest way is probably to just put the media from the 2213 in the 2217.
