I know I will not qualify as a monster fish keeper, but I wanted to get some thoughts in regards to a filter for a 29g tank.

The tank will be home to a school of Tiger Barbs. It will have pool filter sand as the substrait. Also I want to eventually add plants such as java ferns and java moss. I want to get an Aquaclear HOB filter. Not sure what size to get. I was thinking the AC50 or the AC70. Would the AC70 be too much current for a 29g tank.

The AC70 may be too much current for a 29g, 300gph flowing on a single outlet hob creates a pretty strong flow

If you want to add plants later i would suggest a canister filter over HOB.

AC70. I just bought three for my dad for his 29 gallon tanks. They work great.

I have an AC50 on my 30G planted tank, but it is only a backup filter; the main filters are two Eheim 2213 cannisters

AC70 is probably a better choice if you're going to have only one filter
