My aquaclear 110 is the only one that gets chewed by sand. my emperors are literally an inch away from a sand dune, but the motor is still running.
AC50, AC70, AC110:
I swear by aquaclear HOB filters. It is the only HOB that I run now, and I have at least one of each of the above noted models running at this time. I have run marineland penguins, and when they die, the ac HOBs are still running every time. The sponge lasts forever, and I like that I can simply remove the carbon insert without having to cut on a cartridge or anything. I have literally never had one fail (My dad had an old one that he had been running for a ridiculously long time that had to be reprimed a couple of times.) AC's are a simple and effective line of HOB filtration, and as far as HOBs go I would say they are the best at 9/10.
The only reason I knocked off one point is because they are a little more expensive than other HOBs in my area.
I'll soon be able to review the Eheim 2217![]()
Amen to that!I had an emperor, second favorite hob, that lasted probably 2-3 years with the intake an inch above the sand like you say, but it eventually did succumb to sand also. I'm sure the aqua clear would do the same thing but luckily they have adjustable intakes. No hob is sand proof. I just hate the charcoal cartridges they use as media, waste of money.

I am ordering a sunsun soon(same brand as aqutop) and I will right an overview... for 50$s and free shiping and rated for 75 gallons, you can't beat the price! I hope I like mine...Im waiting for a canister aquatop cf 400 to be delivered to me within the next week so I'll write something about it later.
For anyone looking for help deciding on a filter. Do some real research with some effort applied, most reveiws are just peoples personal opinions. This is fine except for most people have only used the filter they are recommending and not any others. The more you research, the more info you gather and the better chances of no picking the wrong filter.
