Filter size-tank size help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok im going to petco to get a test kit as my previous one is insufficient i found out. I can tell i need something tho. My water smells like fertilizer faintly.
May just be nitrate, common in fertiliser :)

Water that I rinse mechanical media in is particularly fruity...

Which is why i posed the original question i have ac20-40 so whats the max i could go to for max filtration whithout a whirlpool. The common answer was a 70

I use a sponge to help diffuse the output flow, so a 70 would be okay really :)

as far as your filtration, i recently read someone say that a canister is only half as effective as its rated capacity, and a hang on back is only a third. i typically agree with this, as ive found that hob filters generally are useless on bigger, deeper tanks.

so in other words, with your 29g tank, shoot for something rated at least 3 times that, hence why i recommended an ac110.
I have a Magnum Penguin 350 Canister rated 350gph that runs 125 empty, with only half its hoses, but I have a Aquaclear something or other HOB rated 400 that definitely runs more than 400gph empty, haven't managed to measure it properly :)

In a small tank like this I tend to agree that there can be such a thing as too much flow. I would go for an AC 70. This will fit your tank and won't create a whirlpool. And will do a great job of filtering the tank, even alone. Again, I think maintenance is more important than the difference between an AC 70 and 110 here.
BTW, it's great that you are educating yourself and are willing to accept advice.
I ran a 400 gph HOB on a 10g as joke once, and it churned that tank so bad it's not even funny.

Ok. First off thanks to everybody for all the advice. I found i had high ammonia and nitrate so i treated water and the odor went away within minutes. I also added ph leveler and treated for any diseases. I bought 6 guppies. 2 male 4 female. Once i see how they react i may a snail, which i hate because they are asexual, or 1 more fiddler crab

What PH leveler did you use? An AC70 will seriously help your tank once it cycles up
