FILTER SOCK QUESTION

I am building a 40 gallon refugium fed 1000GPH thru two 4" x 12" filter socks.

My question for you sump/filter sock users is
Do you see any reason each sock can't handle 500 GPH ?
If you have a comparable setup , how often do you service your sock(s) ?
 
I run similar flow through 2 100 micron socks and I clean them every week to prevent overflow. How ofter is really dependent on how much you feed. Filter socks filter more the more stuff is in them so towards the end of the week I notice the socks look really dirty and fat. I used to just swap them when they would overflow but found it best to do it with the water change.
 
My 100 micron filter socks are each handling about 750gph at the moment...

Initially I was having to switch them out almost daily because they were overflowing, but this tank had some issues going on when I first added them.

Now I'm getting about 3-4 days in between changes. I think part of the problem is I have play sand in that tank and a lot of it ends up in the overflows and clogs up the socks.

But I'm selling this tank, and hoping on the new tank I'll at least get 7 days between sock changes.

Well I definitely won't be using play sand again. That stuff is just way too fine. I'll either be going bare bottom, or using either Tahitian Moon sand or Pool Filter Sand, as both are much larger, heavier grained sands.
 
I think you will be fine at 500gph.

I run the larger filter sock (7") and I have to replace them about once a month.
 
You should have any problems, it depends on how much you are feeding and what you have in your tank. I am running 1 x 50 micron and have to change it out every 2-3 days, feeding shrimp to ray and aro.
 
Thanks for the replies, it sounds like I'll be OK.
My plan is to start with the 200 microns and work my way finer till I can get a week between services.
 
i ran a 7x16" sock on a 30g sump at 1200gph. just had to change it 2x/week
