Filter socks Nylon or Felt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use nylon and have been changing between different micron ratings, 50 seem to clog up even when they look clean, and need washing almost daily. I think the 200 last about a week, but I also add filter wool (floss) inside the sock to improve clarity.

I think felt give better water quality (that's why I add floss to the nylon ones) but are much hard to clean, the nylon ones I just rinse under the sink and there good to go.

Thanks, ya Alot of reef guys swear by the nylon but I imagine they have smaller tanks. These ease of quick rinse is what I'm leaning towards.

I used to have a 600litre reef, you have to remember in saltwater you measure nitrates in decimals there so low, so the dirt level are completely different, you still clean them often to stop nitrates leaching back into the water even though they may not be that dirty. I think nylon last longer as hand washing under a tap isn't As harsh as putting felt ones in the washing machine. The felt ones are hard to clean as I had not got a washing machine I was allowed to use lol.
