Will they work under water? I figured they would work some just not as effectively. I know they will always be full of water so some water will be pushed out the top, but I imagine some water will be forced through the sock also.

I have my DIY filter socks under water. I just zip tied to the pump output.

That sounds scary what if it clogs? how do you get the water from the pump to the tank? Is the filter sock in the tank and tied to the output? or is the pump in the tank and filter sock is in the over the tank filter?

Water will take the path of least resistance!

So we are think that it wont work? I under stand why the presurized method works it has no choice, but I don't want to zip tie a filter sock. If its sealed then you up the creek if it clogs and you don't notice in time.

Any ideas for mechanical filtration under water?

i had them underwater and i didnt like the way they worked. i would try to leave at least 3/4 of the sock out of the water

What was it about having them underwater that you did like? I has planing on using filters socks with the plastic ring and having all but about 1" under water.

i didnt like that it would float around a lot, even when attached to a mounting plate. and if its under water, a lot of the water will want to spill over the top, w/o going down through the sock

I agree this happens to me even with only 1/2 submerged, since its half submerged when it starts to clog just a little it starts to overflow and all the crud spills over.

I just drop a powerhead into the tank and tie a nylon strainer bag to the outflow. Nothing can really go wrong. It just gradually clogs and once it inflates like a balloon, you know it's time for a cleaning or switch-out.
