I just drop a powerhead into the tank and tie a nylon strainer bag to the outflow. Nothing can really go wrong. It just gradually clogs and once it inflates like a balloon, you know it's time for a cleaning or switch-out.

Same thing I am doing. Not perminent just to clear out the murk from the sand. But it is in the tank. No failure is going to make my floor wet. Will post pics when I get home.

I use various sized filter pad and foam blocks for my mechanical filtration. The way my sump is designed water had no choice but to go through 50 and 100 microm filter pads along with 20ppi foam and the generic blue/white fitler pad you can get at about every LFS.
