Filter socks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I am going to do 4 sets of filter socks with each set having 100, 50 and 25 micron socks as per Pharaoh's suggestion in earlier threads involving filter socks.

Thanks very much for the info and your time Jose and thanks for the warning Laticauda. It is appreciated.

My filter socks are 4inches longer than my sump and I have no problems, they just bunch up at the bottom.

Good to know. Thank you.

If your previous 50 micron filtration was not enough, then you have something wrong with your setup. You might have bypass somewhere or the 50 micron pad was worn out.
A 25 micron filter sock will increase your maintenance considerably at no real benefit to water clarity over the 50.

The size of my sump in relation to my stand makes it impossible for me to see exactly what is going in at the back of the sump.
I have often found parts of sponges that I use to fill small gaps floating free or the micron pad dislodged on maintenance. This means that bypass is happening but I can't get into my sump properly to make sure everything is in place.
I have to feel my way around which as an ex-RAF avionics tech is nothing new to me but it is still a pain, hence the new sump and set up.
When I bought the set up the company failed to mention the internal height of the stand and how easy maintenance of the sump would be.

You can't go wrong with 4 sets of 3 socks (100,50,25micron) and some bio media though.

I understand your access difficulty.
Still the 25micron sock is unnecessary, it will give you increased maintenance at no real benefit to water clarity. The 50 micron is beneficial over the 100 and can also increase maintenance, but the water clarity achieved with a 50 micron is much better from my experience and worth the maintenance.

Agreed. I would just stick with the 100 and the 50. If you're feeling crazy, try out those 100/50 combo socks. I've been meaning to give those a try.

im just curious would it be better to run a 200/100/50 then a 100/50

It might be. I've never run the 200. I had pretty good luck with the 100/50 combo. I had to change it once a month or so. If you find yourself changing them out a lot, I would give it a shot. The worst it could do is stay the same. I bet that it would help catch bigger food particles.
