I have never used filter sock but I am building a new sump and I an thinking of using 2 for my planted 110gl.I am not sure which brand is the best? Can they be rinsed out?Should I get 100 or 200 micron?Pump is a 9.5 magdrive sump is a 33lg with a Pinpoint ph controller and it has a 350 magnum running the UV sterilizer and the cerges co2 reactor

Thanks for any and all help

Bought all mine from McMaster Carr. Super cheap, washable and effective.

Ive bought some from Bulk Reef Supply and McMaster Carr. I run a 50 and a 100 on my 300 and a 100 on my 120. The 50 clogs up after about 3-4 days but really keeps things clear. Ive got 200's and almost never use them.

I wash mine in the washing machine with bleach. Add and extra rinse cycle and they come super clean

Yes you can clean filter socks. You can't just rinse them out though. You need to use something to get the dirt out. Some people suggest using bleach, but I don't. Use hydrogen peroxide instead because it cleans much better and its safer than bleach. Heres an article about it that tells you why hydro peroxide is better and how to clean your filter socks: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1943735

McMaster is a great place to buy filter socks from. I use 100 micron and change them out every week during a water change. I have 5 filter socks and i wash the unused ones every month. My water looks cleaner since I started using filter socks instead of just canisters. Also, if you have some kind of prefilter sponge on your overflow, that helps keep your sock clean so much longer. I think most of the fish crap gets stuck on my prefilter instead of the filter sock. I use a CPR hang on back overflow and it has a prefilter sponge that works great. I just clean that every week and the tank looks much nicer than when i just had fx5s.
