filter socks...

i use 200, 100, and 50 micro socks.. i think once tank ran through with 100m for the 2-3weeks and the 100m is dirty i would change to 50m felt and that last me 2-3 weeks... i never stacking my socks up.. once that dirties up i would clean the sump up and start all over with maybe 200 all the way down to 50.. easy to keep track of cleaning sump and media in the sump... from initial 200m down to my 50s i have about 3-4 months...
 
Key is to get the largest socks possible. 32 long and 7 wide are great. Then use as many as you can for your setup.

From what I've read on reef sites it seems like the mesh socks are easier to clean by hand and maintain their micron rating longer, but felt does a better job at catching small particles like you implied. The socks will be my only form of mechanical filtration though so it sounds like felt is probably the way to go. I just wonder how many days 100 micron felt socks would last with a few 20" fish... anybody try stacking 100/200 to prolong cleaning?

Hmm I had been planning on using two 7x16s, do you think the 32s would work in a standard 55g sump (without baffles)? It's only 12" wide so I'll have to mount them along the front panel
 
Lower the number the more it'll collect but they clog quicker.
200 micron lasts weeks for me. 100 about a week, 50 about 3 days, 25 micron a day or 2 at best.

Ah ok, I thought so ! That's good to know as I have socks at work that are 5, 10,15,20,25 :) so if I ever want crystal clear water I know what to add :D
 
I run qty 2, 7 x 32 socks I use a 30" 120 g for my sump . I use to stack my socks. I'd pull a 50 over a 100 or 200 micron sock . That way the water would go through the 100 into the 50 . Became a pita . So now I run a single 100 or 200 micron seamless felt sock . To polish water I just have a foam intake screen on my return pump . That's a lot easier to clean . I just soak my socks in a bleach water tub and then just hand wash . Then dry outside hanging in the sun .
