I have never used a canister filter. So basically it is a temporary storage container for fish waste, as it gets biological reduced into nitrate.
That gets removed with many gallons of water changes.
How hard would it be to modify a canister, with a k1, type self cleaning media, and have the return from canister, discharge into a, easy to clean mechanical, HOB, or filter floss tray, sock.
