Filter system suggestions for a 180 for ray

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Anyways, a single Fx5 would do the job if you dont overstock with other fish. We are looking at 1 ray here, it does not produce waste as a horse.. K1 sump would be the best choice no matter how you turn it around, BUT, and Fx5 would do the job just as good on this tank. You will not ever get Nitrate, nitrite and ammonia _below_ zero. Some filter systems on here should be able to tho :p

I would not run just one fx5. Nitrite and ammonia MUST be at zero. Nitrate removal is not a function of the filter. IMO the smaller the tank the more filter volume is needed as the smaller body of water is less stable and the waste less diluted. I am an over filter queen though. Sumps give big volumes.

If you cannot have a sump then I would advocate two externals so that you can clean them in rotation (using old tank water) that way you always have a fully mature filter and a backup should one break / fail. Event though I have over 100gal sump I still run a large external just in case and to provide cover when one has been spring cleaned (in old tank water)

My opinion is to always have a backup, spare filters, spare pumps and spare heaters all running so if one goes Down then fish do not die

I am totally into the backup thing, always good to have multiple choices. But 1 ray need more then an Fx5 for main filtration? Thats just uncorrect, sorry.. In that case all of my 9 rays should be dead long time ago. Have had em for 2 years. Never nitrite, ammonia, nitrat at 20(doesnt matter in this case tho).

Don't forget that I said "I would not run" it doesn't mean you should not, it is my opinion. The operative word being I. I am sure that you could, I just wouldnt.

Also

An experienced ray keeper (such as yourself) will know how to keep them alive and what to look out for.

I appreciate all the good info guys. I, however, am not going with the 180. I'm going to go with something with a larger footprint, more than likely 6x3...so I need to save more pennies. Though, the suggestions on filter types and ideas you've all presented are still valid. I do like the build it yourself wet/dry ideas.
Thanks!
