Going off the manufacturers gph specs is useless...

I measured the actual flow rate of my fx5 after 2 months in my tank full of media... 660g/h!

i also have 2 internal filters for bio and current, plus a large sponge filter.

 I don't think I'd say mfgr. specs are "useless". They are a reference point. The measurements are taken w/ filter empty for consumer purchase info. It's so you won't buy an A/C 20 or '30' when you really need a '70' or a '110'. Media type, amount & placement will impact somewhat on those specs, as well as filter mfgr. Generally, subtracting 25/30% will give you a reasonable estimate. If your set-up requires exact or constant flow monitoring then a meter might be necessary. http://www.purifydrinkingwater.com/Product-A-DF-086.htm Yes "actual" flow rate is a better indicator of how your filter is doing but for me, approximation ('ballpark') will suffice. "T"
(Oh! BTW great flow on that FX5. 925gph mfgr. - 660gph actual = about 28% difference) approximately!!

On my 125 I have 1 Fluvel 405, and two Aquaclears.....for a total of 1140 GPH....or, a turnover rate of about 10 per hour if you include bogwood water displacement.

1 14 inch Anthicus Adonis, 5 Silver Dollar, 1 Black Barr, 1 Red Hook, 1 Chalceus, 1 10 Inch Black Ghost Knife, 1 Marbelled Sailfin, 1 Xingu Royal and one 12 inch Red-Flagtail Proc.

i've been meaning to pump up the gph. but its kyrstal clear always. there's a 200gph power head for circulation in there so if u wanna include that, its 600gph of circulation lol. im movin the tank soon anyway n it'll be 1k gph after the move.

I should of been more specific, in this thread the mfgr is useless... you agree?

But it is useful as a reference when choosing a filter for your tank size and species kept, but noobs need to realise manufacturers will do whatever it takes to get the highest output possible so they can quote it on their box(test them with very short same length tubing, no media, low head height etc.) so once you add media and start using different length or longer tubing(canister) the mfgr goes out the window...

were you being sarcastic about the fx5 flow rate? i can't tell

I have found the actual flow rate to be less the more you stuff into your filter. If you were to run your filter with absolutley nothing in it it would probabally be close to the actual rating. Who is going to do that right I think that is where the manufactures come up with their ratings. I voted for 10 times plus I overfilter all my tanks.

Did you read my post?

after i redo my sump and get my new pump i hope to 8 to 10x per hour mabe more im still in design stages i could not tell you my turn overrate at this moment in time but it is 10x plus with too much flow

for me it works out at 9.6533333333333333333333333

i also worked this out a full load for all 4 of my filters as without media its around 13.17333333333333333333.

i say 10 x turnover for me
