I had this issue a few years ago and I tried quite a few of the canisters on the market. It's true that the fx5 is one of the best canisters out there. I have one myself for a 110 high setup I'm getting ready to start. It may be a little overkill for your setup though. If you want to save a little $ go with the eheim 2217. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of other pumps (media baskets, priming pumps) but the simplicity of the design is what makes it so brilliant. It's time tested and comes with all the media you need to get started. I currently have 2 2217's on my 125 frontosa tank and 2 2215's on individual 46 gallon tanks. I can go on on with reasons for eheim but trust me you will not be sorry if you do.

I WOULD DO THE AC110(aqua clear) +SPONGE FILTER COMBO...save some dollars and you can use the media from your old filter in the ac110 to "seed" it...good luck....

Not sure how long you have have oscars but they are messy fish as kewl as I think they are. You want a filter or filters that are as easy to service as possible. If you want the Canister buy a Aquatop CF500 it's a Marineland C530 with Ultra built in and the best part is that it is cheaper. I'm sure there are quite a few on here with them that can chime in. The media volume is Massive.

Throw another vote into th hat for an fx5, pair that with a good Hydor circulation pump and your good to go.

do the fx5 if your budget allows you to. I've owned 8, only have 3 now, but they've never failed me and never had any issues. they're pretty reliable and extremely quiet!

I have a 75 gallon tank with a 9 inch oscar in it. I'm running a aqua clear 110 and fluval 406. I wanted to get another tankmate (s) with my o. I have tried another oscar a jack dempsey and tinfoil barbs and they didn't work and I had to return them. I was think that Birchers are really cool but am opened to anything That you guys have to say thanks.

I have 5 tanks 4 currently up and running but I have 2 Marineland 530 on my 125, 1 530 on my 90, 1 360 on my 55 a 220 on my 30, and my new tank I just bought and I spray painted a flat black background on will be running my other 360. So my vote is marineland. I don't have any issue or complaints with fluval. These are what I started out with and very comfortable with.
