crystal clear water and enough bio support to deal with a decent sized stock or it might be because I have the Emp 400's as well :D
 
well since you already have the 2 400's I would just add a canister to them then you can run the canister and the 2 400's with no problems, remember it is better to over filtrate...
 
First I would try to replace the Emp 400 with AC110. Although I like the emp bio wheels for smaller medium stocked tanks, the AC110 is far superior in mechanical filtration(plus no replacement cartridges to buy). Now to take care of the bio, a wet dry sump would be best. If not go with the eheim 2217 it is fairly affordable. You could also go with rena xp3, but to make it a decent filter, ya should run eheims ehfimech and ehfisubstrat in it.
