Im gettin a 300 gal for my 22in red belly pacu. The tank is reef ready (as it has the hole in the glass for a sump). When the fish dieds hope not for a long time, but if it does it will be saltwater. So im lookin for a freshwater filteration set up? The fish has very big waste and thinking of needin alot of mechanical filteration. I heard that a sump in a fresh water is not what you want. I have been looking at the fluval FX5 with a aquaripure nitrate filter. Soo what do you guys think???????:)

Very big waste, no wantum in tank.
Sump good.
FX5 good.
But if you don't know what your nitates are, there isn't a point in a nitrate filter. There is no telling what you're combating. A drip system would minimize your need for water changes (other than gravel vacs), and would tie in nicely with a sump.

If you are looking for simple. Plug the holes in the overflow and just hook up 2 FX5's. Get them used to save some money or buy new. It's the more simple way if you are not good with working on sumps. You can do both like me. On my 180g I have an FX5 that is hooked up to my sump and a uv sterilizer with a y valve.

I am setting up my 300 this weekend and have installed bulkheads for two FX5's and I also have a 60 gallon sump.
Hopefully this will be sufficient.
I think with a live plant refugium as part of the sump I can control nitrates with weekly 30% water changes.
Let me know how yours works out.

The dimension's are 96"W x24"D x31"T. I do not have it, but its being ordered form Glasscages.com. Its 300 gallans wish I had pics then it would be home. LoL

Snow, I would love to see pics of your setup and anyone that has pics of big freshwater filteration setups it would be very helpful.. I need to learn the ways of the sump tank LoL. it will be a saltwater in a few years.
